Assessing the Role of the Board Are you interested in knowing what Board members know about their roles, responsibilities and methods of operation? Try this quiz. The results might assist in designing training for new Board members. 1. How does the Board carry out its primary functions—legal, fiduciary, planning, public relations, hiring and evaluating the CEO?
2. How does the board go about developing and adopting a policy?
3. What is the process to review or modify a Board policy?
4. Who determines the direction or vision for the organization? How is that done?
5. What is the process the Board uses in the selection of an executive director?
6. What is the board's role in the evaluation of the executive director?
7. Does the Board establish its own standards for performance, i.e., attendance requirements, minimum contributions, etc.
8. How does the board evaluate its own performance?
9. If applicable, how often is the mission statement reviewed by the Board?
10. How is the mission statement of the organization implemented?
11. Does the board have a strategic plan with goals and objectives? How is that done?
12. How is the strategic plan managed from year to year? Who receives reports on progress?
13. Does the Board conduct a legal audit annually? (Where are key documents? Is the minutes book kept up to date and signed? Who is responsible for key legal and fiduciary functions and documents?)
