The Volunteer Leader as Change Agent

Mary Kay Hood
ISBN   0-9723448-1-0
Available at Volunteer Today Bookstore

Mary Kay Hood’s new book comes on the heels of her “One Minute Answer To Volunteer Management Questions: A Practical Approach.”  Her first book is a no-nonsense review of the basics of managing volunteers.  She quickly shows the steps to organize a voluntary effort.
Hood’s new book, The Volunteer Leader as Change Agent, is designed for anyone who considers managing volunteers as a profession, wants to be treated as a professional, and operates a department with professional leadership.
Her chapters move the reader from self-discovery, with a series of tests on a variety of communication skills needed by the effective leader.  She brings in the challenges that different age cohorts bring to managing a diverse work force and how the leader/change agent might respond.
The central theme of the book is preparing you to be the person who helps others make the changes necessary to move a program, organization, or institution forward.  There are strategies and tips galore to move from talking about it to doing it.  It is highly referenced to others who have written about organizational change.
There is a chapter on working with teams and resolving conflicts so often evident in any group work.  The book ends with a case study that illustrates her views from the previous chapters in a real life example of how to be a leader and change agent.
