VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERING

A recent workshop for managers of volunteers included discussion about the virtual or online volunteer.  Managers with extensive experience with the face-to-face volunteers expressed skepticism about the wisdom of engaging people in this “distant” manner.  Many myths about the virtual volunteer popped up during the discussion.  “It is all young people.”  “They won’t stay.”  "They do what they want.” Most of those complaints are myths.
There is a resource to start a virtual volunteer program.  Jayne Cravens has been writing and studying this type of volunteering for a decade or more.  Her Web site on thinsign virtual volunteergs related to virtual volunteering includes information on virtual volunteering.

The site also has many examples of how organizations engage virtual volunteers.
