Maximize Search Engine Use

The Internet is big! Really, really big! Familiarity with search engines can speed up duties of the manager of volunteers and volunteers. Google.com is the search engine of choice for millions of Internet users.  There are other browsers also offering various services.  It pays to know the features of your favorite browser.

Google is talented in developing new ways of looking at the Internet.  Below are a few features that Google offers that can be helpful in managing a volunteer program.

  • news.google.com  Need a current event?  Forget about the newspaper, use the Internet like teenagers do to find stories that are only minutes old.
  • video.google.com  Google has its own video search engine.  Find an educational video on the Internet that you can play for clients or volunteers.  Try “The Difference Between Men and Women” on YouTube.  Prepare to laugh.
  • images.google.com/  Google is arguably the best image search engine in the world.  Try finding a picture of something today. Easy to use in brochures, PowerPoint presentations, or handouts for training.
  • scholar.google.com  Another project that Google is working on is to create a more efficient way to search scholarly papers. Often the answer to management of volunteer issues can be found in academic journals.  This site makes it easy to identify what might help.  Usually the journals are available through a local college or university. Good job
  • translate.google.com  Enter something to be translated.  Brochures, Web sites, contracts, handbooks can be in another language quite quickly.  Be sure to have someone who speaks the language to double check for grammar and wording.
  • www.google.com/calendar/ A Google calendar can be shared by everyone working on a project. You can create more than one by creating new email addresses
