BOARDS AND PAID STAFF RELATIONSHIPS

Sometimes the relationship between the board of directors and the paid staff is not harmonious.  Here are some tips on what a board of directors can expect from the staff:

  • Have objectivity in reaction to Board-Volunteer suggestions
  • Conduct day to day business
  • Have basic knowledge of the organization
  • Manage programs to achieve goals/objectives
  • Keep them informed
  • Use them well with insightpeople around table
  • Be professional
  • Know when to ask for help
  • Handle the personnel management of paid staff and volunteers
  • Pay attention to details
  • Use time wisely
  • Exhibit openness in individual/organizational relationships
  • Adequately prepare for meetings
  • Share leadership with volunteers
  • Provide accurate, complete, concise information

Sometimes staff and board volunteers become confused about their roles and responsibilities and to whom they are accountable.  Use this simple grid to help define roles.
