COMMENTS ON MANAGING OLDER VOLUNTEERS

Dear Readers:

Apparently I pressed a “hot button” last month concerning working with older volunteers!  We had many questions, comments, and much chatter about it.  One reader offered a suggestion based on how her organization continues to involve older volunteers as they age in place:

"In response to the recent column regarding older volunteers who may no longer be effective in their role…
Our organization utilizes many older volunteers, to visit residents in Long Term Care homes, and if they have any complaints, work to resolve those issues with the administration of that home. This is a tall order, and we have some extremely dedicated and effective volunteers. All work at a sub-agency, with a local program director, and as was mentioned in the question to Ask Connie form close relationships with their fellow volunteers. One way we work with older volunteers, on occasion, is to make the volunteer an “Emeritus” Ombudsman.  Meaning, they act in the role of a “friendly visitor,” and still attend all group functions of our volunteer corps. This preserves their dignity, yet enables us to place another volunteer Ombudsman at the home to meet our program goals."
