NEW HAMPSHIRE PROPOSES REQUIRED TRAINING FOR NONPROFIT BOARD MEMBERS

The senate of New Hampshire has passed a law that would require at least one board member of a nonprofit charity to receive training on financial management, governance, or ethics every year.  The charities affected are those receiving government dollars for the services delivered.

ASSESSING BOARD PERFORMANCE

Effective board performance is critical to the success of a nonprofit.  Like its volunteer program colleague, it deserves evaluation.  It should be done annually.  There is a link below to an assessment tool that is useful for most Boards.  It can be “personalized” to a specific organization with additional questions or categories.

  • Introduce it at a Board meeting, distributing copies.
  • Send copies electronically or by mail to those who missed the meeting.
  • Make completion easy by using online site like SurveyMonkey. Send links to entire board to that site.
  • Set a due date and send reminders.
  • Provide a space for people to include demographics and for follow-up.
  • Log returns so you are not nagging those who have already returned it. sign says assessment
  • Strive for high return rate.
  • Get a student volunteer to do tabulation in data base.
  • Create colorful charts for PowerPoint presentation.
  • Share the demographic profile of board.
  • Look to see if certain demographics responded differently.
  • Make follow up calls when respondents requested them.
  • Put making changes into the hands of board members.
  • Monitor progress on changes.
