Did you know that 24% of the population of Hawaii engages in volunteering?  That the national rate of volunteering in the US has gone from 27.4% in 2002 to 26.8% in 2009.  Those statistics and more can come in handy for managers of volunteers in the US. You can find that and your state’s or city’s volunteer rate at http://www.volunteeringinamerica.gov/index.cfm

Were you aware that in Canada 66.6% of those who are employed are also volunteers?  Or that 65% of those who are married are also volunteers?  Check out the Statistics Canada site for more information.

There are 137,000 people employed in the nonprofit sector in Scotland.  In 2009 the nonprofit sector received 6% of funding from the nonprofit sector.  That information and more at

Statistics are a fascinating and a good measure of where volunteer programs are, nationally, locally, and at a state and provincial level.  The ones above are sample sites from the US, Canada, Scotland, and Japan.  Many nations keep track of volunteer engagement and philanthropy.  The information provided can be most instructive in helping guide targeted recruiting efforts.  See where your state or province provides such information about volunteers as, age ranges, demographic, gender, or marital status.
