New Resource on Online Volunteering

It’s Free. A new resource on online volunteering will soon be available from Macdonald Youth Services in Winnipeg. Based on the work of Randy Tyler's with online volunteers, a multi-media resource will be published and distributed to nonprofits around the globe. What Is It That Constitutes A Professional Volunteer Program? Part Three

Organizing the volunteer program to gain professional respect and ease of managing requires a systematic completion of activities that lead to an end. Decades of research and experience by managers of volunteers provides an outline of what must exist in order to consider a volunteer program truly professional. In a three part series "Volunteer Today" lists the elements of such programs and the benchmarks that demonstrate the element is in place. Review this list and see how your program is doing. 1. Management and supervision strategies are matched to the volunteer and the position they hold.
  • There are a variety of communication strategies for regular contact with volunteers; newsletter, phone tree, email, Web site, etc.
  • Record keeping systems are in place to record demographic information, history of service, training completed, etc.
  • Volunteers receive regular feedback on their performance.
  • Conflicts are addressed immediately.
  • There are written policies and procedures for volunteers to guide their performance and behavior.
  • Specific techniques to manage volunteers are different for long-term continuous service volunteers and episodic ones.
2. Volunteer skills are evaluated and they have the opportunity to evaluate the organization.
  • Volunteers receive informal assessments on a regular basis.
  • There is a formal yearly assessment of volunteer skills for those engaged in long-term continuous service.
  • Volunteers have an opportunity to assess the policies and procedures of the organization as it supports the work of the volunteers.
  • Clients, members, patrons, or those served have an opportunity to comment on volunteer skill levels.
  • There is a record keeping system for evaluations.
  • There is a process to remove a volunteer for cause.
3. Volunteer recognition is an ongoing process of motivation and evaluation that begins the day the person indicates an interest in volunteering.
  • There is a formal award program where volunteers can nominate other volunteers to receive awards.
  • Awards are named and the same tangible object is presented in conjunction with the same award, year after year. (Example, the Harvey Jones Award for Resource Development is a plaque-every year.)
  • There are many informal ways the entire staff recognizes the presence of volunteers.
  • There are awards exclusively for those giving long–term continuous volunteer service.
  • There are awards exclusively for those giving episodic volunteer service.
  • There is a record keeping system, which is permanent, for all awards presented to volunteers.

The Points of Light Foundation has forms available to nominate volunteers and volunteer organizations for the Daily Points of Light Award. It is designed recognize individuals and groups that demonstrate unique and innovative approaches to community volunteering and citizen action, with a strong emphasis on service focused on the goals for children and young people set by the Presidents Summit for American's Future.
