The above are only a few of the headlines that have appeared over the last 6+ months demonstrating that the nonprofit community is being looked at very carefully by regulators - perhaps as an offshoot of the recent for-profit corporation scandals. Boards need to be aware of this and be sure they take time to examine their operations regularly, including conflicts of interests, fund raising costs, the need for and operations of an audit committee, controls in the handling of money, lobbying restrictions and over-all conformity with state and federal regulations governing nonprofits.
