Taking a Hard Look at Your Organization’s Operations

The above are only a few of the headlines that have appeared over the last 6+ months demonstrating that the nonprofit community is being looked at very carefully by regulators - perhaps as an offshoot of the recent for-profit corporation scandals.

Boards need to be aware of this and be sure they take time to examine their operations regularly, including conflicts of interests, fund raising costs, the need for and operations of an audit committee, controls in the handling of money, lobbying restrictions and over-all conformity with state and federal regulations governing nonprofits. Jeanne H. Bradner
Jeanne H. Bradner is an author, consultant, trainer and speaker on volunteerism, board development and leadership. She is the author of three publications, The Board Member's Guide, A Beneficial Bestiary and Leading Volunteers for Results: Building Communities Today. She served as director of the Illinois Governor's Office of Voluntary Action, Midwest Regional Director of ACTION, and Executive Director of the Illinois Commission on Community Service. She is the volunteer program specialist for Illinois' Harper College Volunteer Management curriculum.
