Taking a Hard Look at Your Organization’s Operations

  • "Board Accountability An increased emphasis on nonprofits," Nonprofit Times, October 15, 2003
  • "Nonprofit Groups Urged to Follow Governance Act," Chronicle of Philanthropy, October 30, 2003
  • "IRS Outlines Audit Plans for Nonprofit Organizations," Chronicle of Philanthropy, October 16, 2003
  • "Study: Charity Fraud Exceeds $1 Billion," Chronicle of Philanthropy, reporting on a report issued by Harvard University’s Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations, November 27, 2003
  • "What Congress Can Do to Fight Charity and Foundation Abuses," Chronicle of Philanthropy, March 18, 2004

The above are only a few of the headlines that have appeared over the last 6+ months demonstrating that the nonprofit community is being looked at very carefully by regulators - perhaps as an offshoot of the recent for-profit corporation scandals.

Boards need to be aware of this and be sure they take time to examine their operations regularly, including conflicts of interests, fund raising costs, the need for and operations of an audit committee, controls in the handling of money, lobbying restrictions and over-all conformity with state and federal regulations governing nonprofits.
